Amazing customs and energy effects dude, I've only had the courage to customise bootlegs at the moment. Once I improve and gain some confidence then I may customise some original figaurts. Right now they are just so expensive to risk ruining haha, I've recently just posted up a WIP of Goku is his outfit against Raditz after removing his weighted clothing. How do you match the colours so well to the originals and what kind of paint are you using, if you dont mind me asking? Thanks i dont blame you for starting on bootlegs, although when i first started there wasnt any to practice on! i remember being awe inspired by the work of Edison, Gil , ferrytale custom and oneandonly before i attempted my own figuarts stuff... before i joined here i had no clue how to approach figuarts customs properly though ( i had done a couple things before but nothing as epic as figuarts) .. i had some figuarts in hand and was like where the F do i start?? but luckily people on the board helped me out a bit (thanks guys!) my point being ,yeah its hard to plunge into destroying something when you arent too confident how it will turn out - especially if youre customising exspensive figuarts! as for mixing colours its just what Littlegreen said - trial and error. to be honest i dont really know it comes natural to me now, ive been mixing colours for years.. all you need to know is the base colour of something and then how to make it lighter or darker... like the instant reaction is to add white or black but that just makes it whiter or blacker - obviously! so youve got to mix/ play with a lighter / darker variation of that colour , or the components of that colour and mix it together .. e.g orange = yellow + red , but if you want to make it darker add more red and if you want to make it lighter add more yellow ( and maybe white) trying to match anime colours is hard - simply becuse most of the time your trying to match the luminosity from a screen which is impossible, and also your TV's contrast and all that stuff might be off.. the way i mixed mine was to get stills from the anime from books like the Daizenshuu then just keep trying and trying until you think - F this im not going to get it any more exact than this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! arrrgh!!!!!!! and RELAX... then add varnish.

Wow, man! I love that you decided to make an accurate Goku. You're old one is still amazing, but I love this one even more. I'm scared to ruin such expensive figures, but with your advice, I might finally take the plunge.

Thanks a lot @baneofdemon22 ,good luck if you do try it out.. remember if you aren't super confident there are always bootlegs nowadays that you can use for practice if you wanted to

I'm sorry I haven't had a chance to respond. I think I going to try making a SSJ God Goku. I just don't know what colors to use for the hair. Keep up the amazing work!

i cant believe 7 years has passed since i posted in here! ( BTW thanks Branjita for keeping some of my pics on the site, dont feel you have to keep the newer stuff i'm going to post on if you dont want )
so i eventually just went for it.. with non acetone nail polish remover
i think it would hugely depend on what the tampos are printed onto as to how it would effect whats underneath. luckily on the goku i used it on it was just plastic so no paint removal issues, but i think if i had not been careful it could have messed wth the colour of the plastic - chemical reaction making it go white... it looked like it started to, so perhaps if i had done more than i did it would have gone much worse - but i'll never know..
The front symbol came off ok but you can see the bit of white where it was effecting the plastic
but the back one not quite as flawless. i perhaps got a bit scared at how much damage i was doing at the time because the plastic was getting discoloured. i stopped and wiped off as much remover residue as i could and left it... it semed ok, but i remember putting some petroleum jelly on it to try n get the sheen back to the plastic which worked...
after washing + some vaseline:
as you can see the tampo / decal has gone but there is still a trace of it... i dont know if this would have remained if i had used more remover or if the application process has sort of slightly set the symbol into the plastic? this wasnt apparent on the front so i can't be sure.
i'll explain the whole point of this and how it went in another post soon.

so the whole point of this was to get a decent coloured DBZ SS Goku gi, as the full power SS Goku orange was horrible... i went through a lot of thought and just cursing bandai / tamashii for the stupid things they do why cant they just get the F£%*@ng colour correct? ? .. so after a lot of time and effort and peeing about this is what i have ended up with...
A decent looking Super Saiyan DBZ Goku:.....
The reason i took off the gi symbols was because i wanted the orange of that gi to use for a SS Goku BUT i didnt just have to do that, i ended up having to swap the arms out because they have actually given Goku the correct normal skin tone - a more pinky colour - BUT that means then it doesnt match anything else properly when swapping bodies and heads!!
so i hesitantly took apart Super Hero Goku and FP SS Goku to swap the arms
( crack open seal along the body and then unscrew inside to take arms out - more than likely the small tabs will break inside but if the chest doesnt hold back together a small amount of glue will do the trick, )
this was the result with an old goku sash added painted aswell as the wristbands:
after all this that i did to avoid painting Goku, because of the imprint of the back symbol and the fact i seem to be OCD about goku gi colours i ended up painting it anyway!
so what i actually have now is this:
the hair isnt as platinum as i was going for but i like this shade so i'm leaving it

Good work! I've always avoided Figuarts customs. They are too expensive for me to mess with, for the most part!

Thanks Branjita, Yeah i was not up for messing with figuarts after they did 2.0 because of the price but also because of the new design , but i got so sick of hating the FP SS Goku colour i was driven to it and TBH it was quite simple to take apart and that particular Goku didnt cost as much as some of the others anyway so i could live with it..
In the SS Gokus saga that i embarked upon ( i turned it into a saga because i seemingly did a lot of messing around!) the next thing i did was this:
I experimented with SS goku's hair to try and make it anime accurate with the shading - i later found out about that figure series that does full figures in this style [cant remember the name sorry - they do the full figure with anime shading) they look interesting but i wouldnt buy one. The process of painting it didnt work for me - i masked bits off and painted the whole thing then peeled away the masking, but perhaps shouldnt have bothered with the masking in the first place!
There is potential for it to look ok if it was done accurately in a factory maybe , but i'm still not sure i would like it , however my attempt was no good to me as it came out a bit rubbish.

That sort of paint job is so difficult. I'm not sure how people successfully do it, but I assume they use an airbrush and masking tape.

LOL ... thats more or less what i did- i used masking fluid not tape. BIG mistake, in this instance would have been better if i'd have done it by eye! but whatever, for me it was just an experiment that didnt work
anyway next on my Goku SHF mission...
i learnt that SHF Super saiyan god Super Saiyan goku is not a terribly bad gi colour in fact its proabaly quite similar to my extremely hated Full power Super saiyan Son Goku figure BUT the difference is the shading - it is much better placed and coloured, the shading on it makes it look less crap + cheap +tacky ..
having said that Bandai / Tamashi still managed to keep up their tradition of doing stupid things by having zero shading on the abdomen and thus making the figure look uneven with a bright bit of orange plastic in the middle of the figure -oh and also they made the boots to be verging towards being black rather than dark blue as everyone who has ever seen dragonball knows - except the people making the figures apparently (morons)
oh and of course its the broly movie verion so no sash - not that they could have included one so you could swap it out and have a series goku aswell , no, that would be a terrrible idea, wouldnt it?
so what i did was added some shading to the abdomen and the crotch area , just in the folds of the gi... simple as adding some paint to the areas and the wiping it off - the residue should stay in the contours of the plastic this makes the figure look less uneven and does make a difference.
i also ened up swapping the boots of the crappy FP SS goku with these stupid almost black coloured broly movie boots.
I boiled up some water, turned it off put gokus legs in for long enough for them to get warmed up (20 s- 30 secs?) and then took them out of the water and PULLED!!!!! some came off easier than others but they will come off if you persist.

Also i bought another SSGodSS Goku for another Goku project (yes i went goku crazy - its bandai's fault - since i gave up on the other character figuarts im just focusing on Goku's!) and so i had lots of different bits of gokus knocking around so i have ended up with a normal Z goku. i took legs from the SSgod SS goku (better shading) , boots form FP SS goku (not black like the broly movie version), torso of FP SS goku and shaded the gi very subtly and it does make it look less crap.
now i know in doing all of this that figuarts will probably announce a new android saga Goku in the next few months . Excellent .

Nice work on them all! By the way, it might be a good idea to host your pics on Cloudinary. Here are the instructions, which I hope are still accurate: dragonballfigures.com/thread/3846/cloudinary-free-image-hosting-membersI need to delete the attachments soon, because they are at 98% capacity. I'm not sure where I have the code saved to selectively delete them (leaving custom figure pics alone, but wiping out everything else), but I hope to put this task off until mid-December.

Thanks Branjita.. i'll keep it in mind... if they disappear and i get around to it i guess i'll try and replace them..
while i'm here i'll post the last of my recent Goku missions
i'll just post one here but I think the photographic evidence is on page 13 and 14 (as i write this anyway that way before tamashi brought out their power aura effects out i had made my own,
which are closer to the demoniacal fit one for kaioken SSGSSGoku, than tamashi's, but anyway, after i had got goku blue i decided to make a new one ..
i also did one for UI goku but its not quite as good - vey hard to capture that effect!
i really think Tamashi should adapt this way of doing auras as you can get a better likeness to the show than the moulded plastic things they have done in the past..they are doing this with a spiderman release so maybe they might consider it for DB in the future? but probably not, lol!
