I heavily disagree with any negative comment about the fancy paint jobs Irwin did from series 6 to series 11! I love those! It's those fancy paint jobs that make their figures look like collectibles and not toys. Banpresto Scultures uses similar paint work, and asks a much higher price. $6 figures with those awesome paint jobs? Yes please! The only one I'm not a fan of is the flecks of black on SS Trunks in armor's hair. Android 16 and so many others have such great paint application...
Jakks is who I always criticise for lifeless skin tones. They are the ones who used flesh colored plastic instead of paint on almost everything. Only some of the early irwin stuff like Nappa have unpainted plastic skin, but all of jakks' figures have it. I can't think of many jakks figures with painted skin... I think Cyborg Frieza does... King Cold... And disappointingly, only early jakks figures with the unpainted skin actually have good looking skin. Series 12 Tien had great skin tone for a figure without fully painted skin. Some jakks stuff was awesome, but overall, their stuff is improved greatly by repainting it yourself.

Flesh colored plastic is the way to go. Jakks did it, but 90% of the time it was with a paint wash and detailing, giving the desired effect. And even when they didn't do the wash/detailing, they always used a good quality plastic that wasn't super cheap and shiny like Irwin's Nappa and such, and the colors were appropriate and lifelike. And when they did use paint instead of plastic for skin, such as on Cell Games SS Gohan's body, it looked really nice and clean. Irwin's painted on skin looks like just that, painted on skin. You can hold up an Irwin figure and see the brush strokes, it was really ugly and amateur IMO. If someone has a pic of Irwin's Raditz vs Jakks Raditz, that would be great. Jakks had really subtle pigment, and it was awesome. But of course, they did release some figures like this... But they weren't very common. In fact, all of the ones I've seen with this problem came from their Fusion Reborn line. Guess Jakks didn't notice the problem...

Major reason I don't like painted skin tone is when it starts to chip and wear off.

Major reason I don't like painted skin tone is when it starts to chip and wear off. Yes exactly. That is another big one for me besides aesthetics.

This is Branjita's. Proof is in the pudding. Their Tien with the green sash was the same way. This is why Jakks' best figures did not have skin tone like Cyborg Frieza, Cell 2nd Form, King Cold, Nova Shenron etc.

I don't want to make this about my customs, but I don't own any of the bad rereleases jakks made of irwin figures, and I don't own any of the opposite. The Goku from the Goku, Puar, Majin Vegeta two pack next to the irwin series 4 and series 6 repaint/rerelease would make such a great photo. I also don't own many figures that aren't customized in some way... or any of the really lifeless ones anymore. These pics will have to do. Jakks typically used some form of airbrushing of paint or dye, I'm not sure which, but I'll just nickname it "mostly unpainted skin" for simplicity. Irwin's single color skin Raditz, Jakks' mostly unpainted skin Raditz, my custom Jakks Raditz with Irwin series 6-11 style paint job. My best example I can put together is a lifeless jakks skin, a great jakks skin, and a great Irwin skin from series 10. The first figure is technically a custom, but I didn't repaint the skin. I don't like a lot of Irwin's early figures while they were experimenting with things. I forgot who mentioned Videl earlier, but my gosh, she's one of Irwin's very best figures in my opinion. Amazing paint job, great size, great sculpt! The only things that are disappointing are a lack of articulation.

Jakks knew how to use plastic and make it look like skin. Irwin's early figure's looked like lifeless plastic, and their later ones look like I painted them (not good).
Jakks isn't the only company to use flesh-colored plastic for skin. It's what most companies do, so that's why I'm so confused here. There's a reason that companies like Mattel, Hasbro, Marvel Select, etc. use it. Real skin has a slight transparency to it, and the plastic with some airbursh/die really captures that.
Painted doesn't always look bad. I have a few figures with painted skin that I really like, such as Jakks Red Hair SS Goku. But as Aussie said, painted always has the risk of chipping.
Those Tiens you posted look fine to me. I own the caped Tien and have him in front of me as I type. I also have an SS Goku that uses the other Tien's body. Both look fine and have subtle shading.

The point is the left topless Tien looks sickly because he's made of a dull skin tone plastic. Compare it to an image of Tien...it's very off. The caped Tien is what he should look like. I posted the Raditz comparison to show you the difference between a lifeless figure and one that is vibrant and real looking. It's an obvious improvement.
The one thing I will agree with you on is the shading Irwin used in a few of their later paint jobs. Some were great like Dabura, but some were excessive like School Suit Gohan where they literally used brown paint to differentiate his skin indentations and I never go that all-out when I paint. They should have used a lighter skin tone brown, kinda like what Bran used on his Raditz or what I used on my Mutaito custom.

School Suit Gohan looks like he was stabbed in the throat. I forgot how much worse that was than the speckles in SS Trunks' hair.
Personally, I like everything to be painted no matter what. Even the great Jakks series 12 Tien head improves with being painted to me.

What about them was not to your liking? Regarding series 12...just the lack of the Irwin paint job. Any other complaints I have for Jakks figures has to do with the awkward sculpts. The Art of Fusion Goku and Vegeta figures (NOT the Irwin remakes, those were incredible, the larger figures with horrible heads) immediately come to mind. Armored Krillin...Series 13 SS Vegito...ALL the GT figures...just not very satisfying. It's so weird complaining about something that happened 13 years ago but I wish Irwin had never went bankrupt. They weren't perfect either but they made some very nice figures (loved everything from Series 6 up to 11). barely read everything else but I caught a few things. I have no complaints on the skin used on Jakks figures, in fact I liked it quite a bit, I thought it looked great with the painted clothes, but I also really like the completely painted Irwin figures. The dry brushing was hit or miss but I think every figure was more enjoyable to look at when they were painted from top to bottom.

Then I don't know a single person who likes that Vegeta head. It's horrendous. The Goku head, however, looks amazing, and it has been re-used on figures such as Red Hair Goku. I think you may be thinking of the prototype pictures on the cardbacks, because the Goku prototype had a freakish looking head just like the Vegeta, but for whatever reason they decided not to use it. As for these figures' bodies, Not many people (myself included) like that Goku body. It has an awkward arched back, steroid overdose blob biceps, weird pants, rounded boots, and as Branjita said, "arthritis hands". Unfortunately Jakks thought it was a good idea to use this body on almost every Goku they released in later years. As for the Vegeta body, it's not as bad as Goku, but I think it's still pretty shite, especially since they decided to boost the height on the new Goku body. It resulted in Vegeta looking like a midget, it's terrible. As for the armored Krillin, I don't know people don't like it. I own it and love it. It's just a bit too big and skin is oddly tan. Like, GT tan. I don't have a problem with the facial expression. I also don't have a problem with the eyes being white (same as the Irwin figure). I've always thought it to be stupid that they got rid of the white in Krillin's eyes when he got older. Series 13 SS Vegito had a shite head, I agree, but a great body. I did a head swap of it with the less articulated Vegito. As for the GT figures.....we don't really need to talk about that. Everyone knows most of those figures were big-headed crap. BUT, Nova and Omega came from that line. Just remember that.

Honestly a lot of members on this forum like to hate on Jakks. When I joined I was really weirded out and taken aback by it, since when I last collected DBZ figures (3+ years ago), Jakks were in VERY high demand. Irwin figures are always easy to find and have reasonable prices on eBay, and I would say that there is a reason (or two) for that.
Everyone is always saying "I wish Irwin didn't go bankrupt". Well I don't. I wish Irwin's creative team and Jakks's creative team did the fusion dance to become the best DBZ figure company in the world. Imagine the figures we could have gotten...

That art of fusion SS Goku head is a decent sculpt, but it's much bigger than any other jakks Goku head, it's about DBGT scale if I remember right. I haven't owned that head in a few years.
I don't dislike jakks. I dislike their laziness on many figures, and I don't like the skin on several figures, but when jakks was good... they were great. Their figures are definitely more rare than irwin's. Just because not everybody may know this, Wal-Mart, Target, and pretty much everywhere else stopped selling jakks DBZ figures after about series 16. The only places you could find them were Toys R Us, and comic book stores. I don't remember Gamestop still selling them...I think they stopped as well. This made collecting really annoying (I stopped entirely) as TRU was a pretty specific trip. I went there a few times specifically looking for DBZ figures and if they didn't have new stuff it was a waste of a trip. I don't really remember why Wal-Mart and Target stopped carrying them... I haven't thought about it in a long time. I remember the last figures I ever remember finding at Target, which is where I did a lot of my buying, was series 15 or 16. SS Goku in armor and battle damaged Mystic Gohan were the last figures I ever saw there. I believe the last figures I ever saw at Wal-Mart were the reissues of Nappa, Raditz, Jeice, etc on the yellow cards. I remember finding those there and they were on clearance and I bought almost every figure they had. I think... the reason they stopped selling them was because DBZ was no longer on Cartoon Network at all...?
Just as a little bonus history, on one of my rare trips to TRU, I remember the pegs were full of the trilogy Tien, Eis Shenron, and DB kid Goku. I think they still had tons of the Soul of Hyper Figuration figures they had renamed Ultimate Figure Series. Those sold horribly because the price was really high I remember. I was like "I'd buy these, but they are a rip off". They had in the clearance bin a lot of DBGT figures, mostly Pan. I'm disappointed I didn't stock up on Eis Shenrons back then. There were at least 4 of them.

I wish Irwin's creative team and Jakks's creative team did the fusion dance to become the best DBZ figure company in the world. Bandai Namco Group: Popy Banpresto Bandai Bandai America Plex Co Megahouse Corporation Tamashii Not to mention that many of those companies were releasing new Dragonball merchandise to the market as far as 84-85.
