While I cannot help with the figures, someone here may be able to. As for the Anime/Manga, Dragonball is a much different story than Dragonball Z really. It evolved from it's inception, so if you're looking for powered up fights and constant escalation of power, that's pretty much a Z experience. I would stills tart with Dragonball though, and go through all of it.

I would recommend instead of watching Dragonball Z though, instead watch Dragonball Kai, as it is an abridged version of Dragonball Z that cuts out a lot of filler. It's not a popular opinion, but when you can sum up most of the series in 1/2 of the time, you will be more likely to finish it. After that, maybe watch the original run of Z.

The 'best' way to experience Dragonball Z is through the Dragon Box release of the series, which is much harder to find.

For reference, original run of DBZ: 291 episodes, DB Kai: 150. Of note, the last arch of Kai has yet to be translated for American release.
