Greetings fellow maniacs,
I only refer to you all that way to make me feel better about my own "collector problems," which, I've recently discovered, run far deeper than I understood.
Hi. I'm new here. Some of you might know me already. For those of you that don't, it's nice to "meet" you. I've loved DBZ since I was 9. I've loved the idea of having a collection since I first lined up two DBZ VHS tapes next to each other and discovered those magic box images we all know so well, but until very recently, I never took the plunge.
To tell you a little about my DBZ collecting history (and I'll try to be brief, because it goes all the way back to 33 days ago..), with the resurgence of DBZ through Battle of Gods, Resurrection 'F', and DBS, and considering I started dating the only girl I've ever met who likes DBZ about a year ago, I've finally become comfortable enough with my childhood obsession to wear Goku shirts out of the house, purchase tickets to multiple viewings of a DBZ movie in theaters, and commit to spending wayyyyyy too much money on toys. I had a few action figures here and there when I was younger, but I was a kid, so I opened them, played with them, then forgot about them. Today, I stand before you a new, repurposed man on a mission.
I've always been a stickler for uniformity in a collection. A little over a year ago, I bought my first Hot Toy at SDCC (Iron Man Mark I), and I have since devised a plan for a future MCU-only Hot Toys display depicting (at least) one of every character produced, as well as enough Iron Man suits to build a formidable Hall of Armor. That said, I don't have much space in my current apartment, so all my Hot Toys are still in their boxes. For now. One day, when I have the space, I plan to recreate key settings from a number of the MCU movies, displayed in individual cases in front of back-lit official movie posters. Hopefully my wife won't mind.
This summer, having been drawn to a Sean Schemmel/Chris Sabat/Chris Ayers signing that was allegedly to happen at the Funimation booth at SDCC, I decided to devise a different plan for a DBZ-only collection, centered around one all-inclusive, special piece of art that I hope to have signed by as many members of the English DBZ cast as possible before we all die. Sadly, the fire marshal closed down the first signing, the day before I got there, and cancelled subsequent signings. Pre-signed Resurrection 'F' posters were handed out instead. All was not lost however, as, after much research and deliberation, and an undying urge to buy anything with the word "exclusive" attached to it (while still making a smart financial decision considering the price of Hot Toys...), I decided to start a DBZ Funko POP! Vinyl figure collection. SDCC 2015 had three exclusives (Golden Frieza with Red Eyes, Black Eyes, and Metallic Vegeta). Anyone who went to SDCC this year will also tell you that there was an exorbitant number of booths filled with Funko Pops, and I scoured each and every one to gather the other 10 DBZ figured. I now have them all, displayed nicely in a stack on a small IKEA coffee table behind all the little items I got/won/"borrowed" from the DBZ afterparty at a bar near the convention center. I actually got Chris Sabat to sign a shot glass there. Woohoo!
To make an already long story marginally shorter, I came home, became obsessed, and soon discovered these wonderful little toys that I saw at SDCC but knew virtually nothing about in the Dragon Ball World Collectable Figures. As a result of the same driving force that has led me to quest for one of every MCU character in Hot Toy form, once I discovered the extent of the number and variety of characters that have been represented in WCF form over the years, I instantly knew I had to have them. And by "them," as with far too many things in my life, I mean ALL of them. So that's what brings me here.
I don't know much else about Dragon Ball toys, but I'm more than interested to learn. My primary goal from here on out is to become somewhat of an expert, and certainly a completist, in both Dragon Ball Funko POP! figures and WCFs. I'm well on my way, and when I can do my collections justice, I'll be sure to upload some pictures in the "Member Collections" forum. But for now, I just wanted to say hello, let you know what I'm about, and proclaim that I'm here to stay.
So, like I said. Hi.
