If you're living with someone (husband, wife, brother, sister, dog, whatever else) and they have a figure you want or have wanted. Would you consider it yours and just not get it? Like would you buy your own copy of a figure you guys already have displayed together.

Unless they gave the figure to me, I don't consider it actually a part of my own personal collection.

I agree with gonstead...I would look at like living with a brother. You guys have some of the same/similar figures, but at the end of the day his are his and yours are yours. The only exception might be if your wife was into figures and she enjoyed combining them for dioramas or something.

More than likely, you're not going to be living with that person forever, so it would best to buy your own stuff.

I agree with coot. If it's your wife and you're both displaying the figures in the same cabinet then there's no reason to buy another one.

If I happen to ever live with another collector we will have a co-hab agreement which will specifically mention figures. Basically, if I didn't buy it or it wasn't a gift I don't consider it mine. If that means my future husband and I have overlap in our collections (I'd totally turn that into a contest, but moving on)then so be it.
Simply having a figure I want in the household does not make it mine and it has to be mine.

cuz my whole thing is I just want some figures because i think they look hella rad so if someone has it and we're living together, i think it would at least move lower on my "must buy" list

I'd say always buy it, so you are 100% sure YOU have it. My friend was with his girlfriend for a long time, they lived together and they both collected figures. Their collection was mingled together. Then, one day, she left him and took all of her figures and even some of his.
If you have your own figures, even if they are stored away, you're covered no matter what.

All I gotta say is get a prenup if you're getting married. If not, you better know that for sure your wife/husband will go after your Dragonball collection out of spite during a divorce. I know someone will think thet they have the perfect marriage and nothing will ever go wrong but seriously if you ask all divorced couples I bet they felt that way at one time. No one can predict the future. Better to be safe than sorry.

My brother is a collector too and we've always kept our collections "separate". When we both lived at home, it still remained that way...especially when we had all our Hot Toys figures in glass cases right next to each other's.  We do help each other a lot though. And when we each have something the other "wants", we always offer it to each other first before we sell it to someone else. We both collect a lot of the similar Hot Toys figures and we both collect Figuarts, but he doesn't collect the DBZ stuff, only I do. He doesn't have the history with it that I do (he was still quite young when we were growing up overseas and doesn't remember Dragon Ball as much as I do). He's uber-excited for the Star Wars stuff. Star Wars is perhaps his favorite line outside of Marvel/DC. The only items we've agreed to have "joint-collection-custody" of are a select few Mondo posters (check them out if you don't know what I'm talking about, basically unique, screen-printed movie posters with limited runs). Mostly because they're extremely limited, hard to get for retail and highly-priced. For example, my brother won the Tyler Stout AVENGERS poster but I paid to get it framed. It currently hangs on the wall at my place. But I won the Tyler Stout GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY poster and agreed to "share" it with him if he pays for that one to be framed. |
