Hey all, I'm new to this forum but I can't say enough about how great some of the member's custom DBZ figures are. I do stop motion animation and the characters I've been working on rely a lot on articulation. Here are my two most recent figures (Nappa was my first figures and Raditz is my most recent). I'll also post some photos of the process later. (I also have a Tien I made from a Marvel Legends Torch that i'll post later) Hope you like them

I really appreciate your attention to detail and blending. I like that you have very distinct, clean lines.

Thanks! I have a long way to go but I do seem to learn something new with every custom. I'll probably re-do Nappa (still trying to figure out how to make his armor removable...)

I used an Undertaker (not sure which brand) but I still need more articulation. Attachment Deleted

I like these! You have good sculpting and painting skills. The one consistent flaw is the size of the armor flaps. Kinda big. Otherwise, they're very good. Raditz' shoulder flaps look like he's going to take flight lol Nappa is the best of them. Show us Tien soon.

Looking on my computer now... I like that you post big pics, I can't stand tiny pics of artwork . Make sure to host the images on your own photobucket or imgur or something else soon though, because I am going to have to delete all of DBF's attachments before July most likely (we're running out of room) and they will just *poof* vanish. Are you using colored clay to make the flaps? Or are they painted? I notice that you must be making the colored portion of the flaps separate from the white outlining, and that's why your lines look so precise. It's an interesting way of doing it that I haven't thought of doing it before. But on Raditz, the alignment of the white on the flaps is kind of off. I'm curious what you're using. I hope you aren't using polymer clay like Sculpey, because I used to use that, and after about 5 years, your custom starts cracking and looking like poo. I think if you look at my finished customs topic, and search Dodoria, I think I have pics of what sculpey looks like after many years. Not good. He's not something I want to salvage, but if I did, I'd cover him entirely with Apoxie Sculpt and just have to redo everything. However you are making those armor flaps... I'd be really interested in hearing the process. They are really perfect looking, so I don't think you are attaching them to the figure and sculpting them directly on the figure. Wax paper? On plastic spoons? How?

Thanks for the info Branjita, I've been using Fix-it sculpt mostly (I guess it's similar to Apoxie Sculpt but has a longer dry time, I think). Nappa's armor was made all from Fix-it sculpt. This was pretty tough and I had a hard time making the outer edges of the flaps. So for Raditz, I decided to do the armor piece by piece. I'll make a post that describes it in better detail (with pictures)

For the armor, I first made an aluminum wire mesh and latex sheet (very thin) and cut out the shapes of the armor. This way, I could bend it however I liked and it would still stay in place. I could also mold it around the characters without worrying about the apoxie getting all smashed up. Once I got it where I wanted it, I applied a very thin layer of apoxie sculpt to the armor (so I could make the lines it it). Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment DeletedBecause he's going to be moving a lot, I decided to try using strong little magnets to hold his shoulder and waist armor in place, however, having the ability to move around a little without falling off or looking awkward. As for the trim of the armor, I used some very thin wires (from an old hard drive) and super glued them around the edges of the armor. This was really tough and as you can see, a little off. I'm thinking that maybe I'll create a little grove or something on the edges to make it fit cleaner. This looked so much better tho than Nappa's trim. I'll have all my process pictures on my imgur page, including Tien. Here's my imgur page that has more and better close up pics: cleve5sp.imgur.com/all/

Latex sheet? Wire mesh? Magnets? Somebody here is high tech with their building materials! Where in the world are you buying those things? Tien's face looks pretty good! But what looks really good is that diorama!!

Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment DeletedHere's Tien made from a Human Torch Marvel figure. It was my first real custom so there are a few things I would definitely do differently (i.e. joint painting, muscle sculpting, etc.). I used a Krillin head from the Figuarts line and just chisiled away some along the jaw. After looking at the Piccolo (figuarts), I'd probably use him as a base next time. The background is part of the set I'm making. Thanks for the feedback!

Sweet! The yellow leggings are a bit long though and the pants oddly proportioned, but good thing you didnt enter the Scene Stealers contest in March....those backgrounds are killer.

Here's a (bad) photo of my in-progress Tien, made from a SS Goku body (SH Figuarts) and Piccolo head (SH Figuarts). You can see a definite size difference from my old one (on the right). Attachment DeletedI'll post more photos as I progress.
