Jakks knew how to use plastic and make it look like skin. Irwin's early figure's looked like lifeless plastic, and their later ones look like I painted them (not good).
Jakks isn't the only company to use flesh-colored plastic for skin. It's what most companies do, so that's why I'm so confused here. There's a reason that companies like Mattel, Hasbro, Marvel Select, etc. use it. Real skin has a slight transparency to it, and the plastic with some airbursh/die really captures that.
Painted doesn't always look bad. I have a few figures with painted skin that I really like, such as Jakks Red Hair SS Goku. But as Aussie said, painted always has the risk of chipping.
Those Tiens you posted look fine to me. I own the caped Tien and have him in front of me as I type. I also have an SS Goku that uses the other Tien's body. Both look fine and have subtle shading.

Major reason I don't like painted skin tone is when it starts to chip and wear off. Yes exactly. That is another big one for me besides aesthetics.

Flesh colored plastic is the way to go. Jakks did it, but 90% of the time it was with a paint wash and detailing, giving the desired effect. And even when they didn't do the wash/detailing, they always used a good quality plastic that wasn't super cheap and shiny like Irwin's Nappa and such, and the colors were appropriate and lifelike. And when they did use paint instead of plastic for skin, such as on Cell Games SS Gohan's body, it looked really nice and clean. Irwin's painted on skin looks like just that, painted on skin. You can hold up an Irwin figure and see the brush strokes, it was really ugly and amateur IMO. If someone has a pic of Irwin's Raditz vs Jakks Raditz, that would be great. Jakks had really subtle pigment, and it was awesome. But of course, they did release some figures like this... But they weren't very common. In fact, all of the ones I've seen with this problem came from their Fusion Reborn line. Guess Jakks didn't notice the problem...

Irwin's Buu Saga figures were pretty good I thought. Dabura, Evil Buu, Fat Buu, Hercule, Videl, Yellow Suit Yamcha, Majin Vegeta, SS3Goku, Kabito, and Supreme Kai were awesome sculpts. On the other hand, Krilin's head was too big, Gotenks' also had a big head, SSTrunks and SSGoten were too short, SS2Gohan's hair was too long, I guess Babidi's head was also too big but I think it was a good sculpt. But that's not a bad amount. For Jakks, the Buu Saga figures were their highlight. Gohan Buu, Tien, Vegito, and Pikkon were fantastic. I wish Super Buu's legs moved and Kid Buu was made too tall. SSGotenks had ugly eyes and SS3Gotenks' head was too large. I wouldn't know about Dabura, cause I never owned him and forgot he existed until you mentioned him now. I have two Hercule's and the proportions are awful. Videl is a good looking figure but she is so short just like Bulma and Chi-Chi, and her articulation is awful. Wouldn't know about Yamcha, but he never seemed like an exciting figure to me. I could be wrong though. I own the SS3 Goku you mentioned and, IMO, he is horrible. The yellow hair Majin Vegeta was a an awesome figure, I will give you that. Best Buu saga Vegeta body sculpt ever. But it lacked important articulation. There are two big reasons why I've always preferred Jakks over Irwin (for the most part). Articulation and skin tones. Articulation is self-explanatory, but Irwin did not know how to do good-looking skin tones. They would either do lifeless skin-colored plastic with no shading and/or wash (Raditz, Nappa), or they would paint the skintone on with this really nasty, ugly paint. The painted on ugliness is very apparent on Buu Saga Krillin, High School Gohan, SS3 Goku, and even Majin Vegeta. It was very unprofessional to me, even as a 9 year old, and turned me off to the figures. And while some people praise Irwin for giving us characters that we would have never got with Jakks (I agree), they also took it too far sometimes. I went into KB Toys a lot when I was a kid, and all I would see were figures like Spopovich and Pui-Pui warming the pegs. They made some really boring ones. But Irwin definitely cared more about the license that they held than Jakks. Jakks has made some truly amazing figures, but as evidenced by the horrendous figures that they sometimes put out and their disgusting amount of parts re-use, they didn't care too much. And how about those bogus rocks they include with EVERY F*CKING FIGURE? Jakks, a company known for making the best accessories and playsets of all time with their WWF/WWE figures, gave us rocks repeatedly for DBZ. Yeah, it's clear they didn't care.

Branjita Ha, I had Pui Pui as a kid, and I always felt like "who the f*** is this guy and what the hell am I supposed to do with him?" Aside from Evil Buu and a few others, I thought their Buu saga figures were terrible.

I wish Irwin had made Series 12 (Vegito, Tien, SS Gotenks, Mystic Gohan, and Super Buu). I don't think it was ever confirmed but it seems all those figures were about to be released before Irwin went bankrupt and then Jakks got their hands on them. They still came out OK (I think Irwin had the casts prepared for all of them except SS Gotenks and Jakks simply produced them) but everything after that series had a very distinct Jakks feel. It's funny you say that because most of the figures in the early Jakks series's (12-15) had a very Irwin feel to them. Pikkon, Tien, Super Buu, SS3 Gotenks, and Vegito in particular. What about them was not to your liking?
