I recently got another Irwin Series 4 Vegeta and realized that it was the "glossy" version as opposed to my matte one. Does anyone know why they made the change mid-series to matte plastic? For reference, the glossy one is the one on the left and the (armless) matte one is on the right. It also seems with the series 4 figures that they get discolored very easily. I've seen Piccolos where the torso and crotch are completely different colors than the legs, but I don't know if those are the glossy or matte ones. My matte Vegeta kinda is discolored in those same spots as you can see in the picture.

I love when other people outside of me know about these color variations. Well, the glossy versions are the original. When Irwin went bankrupt, they released a final set of figures which consisted of
Series 4 Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo with matte colors. Series 8 Dabura and SS Goten & SS Trunks.
Not sure if the latter two have any variations. I own both paint variations of Goku and have been wanting to one day own the Vegeta and Piccolo.

I love the matte and glossy versions of Goku, the matte one looks better, but the high gloss Goku just looks so nice and unrealistic I guess! I only like the glossy version of Vegeta. And as far as Piccolo goes, I only like whatever version you can find where his crotch is actually the same color as his pant legs. I'm not sure why both exist. I know my glossy versions are the ones I bought from Walmart brand new. And I know my matte Goku was purchased on ebay after the bankrupcy stuff, because he actually came inside a plastic bag that was factory sealed or something. Android 17 and 18 were both among Piccolo, Goku, and Vegeta in those bankrupcy figures that ended up on ebay. I don't remember how they differed, except I don't believe they were as well painted. A lot of Android 18 figures these days have vests that don't match their skirts. My 18's jacket used to match her skirt, but despite not being stored in view of sunlight, her vest has discolored to a different color of blue. I'm not 100% positive my 18 is the one I bought new at Walmart, but I believe her vest used to be the same color as her skirt. Looking at ebay, I'm seeing evidence that original Irwin ones have mismatched blues. I don't personally believe they were like that 16 years ago. I think they discolored over time! But my research on ebay shows that the discolored 18 isn't the bankrupcy one... and neither is the one that isn't discolored. It's uncommon that I'm seeing ones that still match. This one only kind of matches. Mine used to look like this as far as I remember, but these days mine is as mismatched as many of the examples above.

I'm guessing that all figures from series 4 that have major discoloration are from the end of Irwin's run. Maybe since they were going out they used cheaper plastic or something, as well as the paint jobs being a little off. From what I can tell, the "rerelease" of series 4 is the only one that has figures that discolor so easily.

Oh, I'm not sure if you misunderstood or not, so I'm going to clarify anyway. Irwin didn't go bankrupt until Series 11. So at Series 4, they were still in business and probably making a lot of money! I believe the reason they tried out matte finish series 4 characters is because all of series 5 was matte finish. I assume those matte ones are all factory leftovers, test shots, or something else not technically meant for distribution to stores. (Slightly on a tangent... Series 5 was the worst set to me, they were colored really crappy and I don't like the way they look. Series 6 through 11 though... my gosh... they are so good. They really got their paint application technique into something that I love.)
It's hard to speculate so many years later though. I don't know the exact history of why those matte series 4 figures exist. And when they went bankrupt, I didn't purchase a set of Piccolo, Goku, Vegeta, Android 18, and Android 17. I got the Goku via a trade with someone.
And I don't know what the deal was with Dabura, SS Goten, or SS Trunks. lasombra would need to talk about that, because I must not know anything about them.

Oh yeah, I got what you meant. I thought that maybe before they went out in 2002 they rereleased series 4 since it had the "base" characters. But your idea of them being factory rejects is probably more plausible than mine.

I think the most noticable variant i saw was with the Goku android saga. I had a super glossy one and a matte one but sadly they got stolen
