Irwin's Dragon Ball Z: The Saga Continues line was released in the late 1990's and was comprised entirely of rereleases of products made by Bandai and AB. The energy-blasting figures in the assortment, presumably originating from Bandai America, saw some changes between their prototype and manufacturing stages. While the differences between most of these are small, changes made to the sculpts of Freeza's head (going from a maniacal laugh to blow-up doll), Super Saiyan Goku's head (going from legendary warrior to some dufus in a budget costume), etc. got me thinking... Why change something that'd have little affect on the overall budget of a figure simply to make it worse?

Interesting. I don't think I've seen these prototypes before and if I have its been many years.
Piccolo and ginyu look the same, ginyu is just position oddly to fit in the packaging. Frieza's blow up doll mouth I guess is because they changed the blast to his mouth rather than his hand but it does seem odd. I don't recall anyone other than nappa and buu shooting energy blast from their mouth.
I have all the old beckett magazines somewhere. There might.be something in there about this. Ill see what I can find.
Do you own any of these? I really like the ones I have (ginyu, piccolo, frieza). Ginyu is my favorite of this line.

Even Figuarts has been guilty of doing this. Not sure why.
I used to have the Piccolo and Ginyu, but I just collect one of each character/form/outfit so I got rid of them since I have better alternatives. Still have the Frieza since the armor is removable(like when he blew it off when he was about to transform). I want to get the Vegeta since I don't have one with broken armor.

I have the Vegeta (missing the energy blast though, sadly) and I used to have a pretty banged up Piccolo. I should be getting a mint Super Saiyan Goku soon-ish, but as it currently stands Vegeta is my only one.

thesupernamekian These comparisons you made were pretty fun, could you host the pics on IMGUR or somewhere else so they don't disappear when I clear DBF's attachment space this weekend? I used to own all of the Irwin remakes of these. I'd have to say that none of them are wonderful looking figures, but the Captain Ginyu is definitely a unique character. There were actually Krillin and Gohan prototypes, which people were dying for back in the early 2000s when I was on dragonballtoys.com But they were never produced and we never really ever saw a better picture than this one. Back then, the only way to get a 5 inch scale (well... close... more like 5.5 to 6 inch scale) Krillin and Gohan was to pay about $100 for Super Collection Krillin and Gohan on ebay from someone who got it from Japan. And I'm talking about the years before Irwin started making their own figures--at the time we were only getting Super Battle Collection and AB Super Guerriers rereleases. Irwin continued this line later on with their own sculpts and for a 5 inch scale collection, Imperfect Cell is pretty much mandatory. It's beautiful.

I suppose I could, though I haven't used the site in the past. Still, I'd love to have some way of my photos remaining on here as those prototype images are the clearest ones I could find (and even then it was on an eBay ad that won't be up forever) so I'll upload them there and link them on this post.

Here's the pics from your album. You can copy the image's location and then use the [img]https://i.imgur.com/zUxbps6.png[/img] tags by typing them out and then pasting the URL of the image between them, or use the and paste your URL there when making your reply/thread. These pics should last forever unless IMGUR becomes the next Photobucket and screws us all over.

The battle damaged Goku was my first DB figure. I still have it.
