It's a combination of things. One, the Figuarts weren't popular at the time so Bandai made less of them then later SDCC figures. The other reason is like you said, the paint. The paint on it really is a lot better. It's actually a repaint that turned out amazingly well. Is it $5000 good? Hell no! I got mine at about $60 when it first came out and honestly if I had to buy it today, I wouldn't even bother with the crazy prices, but it does look nice. I got it specifically over the regular SS Goku because it looked way better. It's also a bit of hype because it's harder to get and a few Youtubers did videos on it saying how amazing it looks.

Fair point. The rarity is a force to be reckoned with, though. At least it's a force to be reckoned with a lot of people's wallets. Hopefully someday when the original Super Saiyan Goku hits a ridiculous price Tamashii Nations will decide to release the SDCC 2011 Goku as a Premium Color figure. Though it may not actually happen, one can hope. (It still could happen, as the original Super Saiyan Goku has officially been discontinued by Tamashii Nations and is sitting at $62.99 with a high amounts of bootlegs) |

It's better to retroactively say the SDCC version is the "Premium Color" edition. Although I'd like to see a new PCE SS Goku (always like seeing variants), I don't see Tamashii returning to the old bodies now that the 2.0 bodies are being used. There may be a few exceptions like PCE versions of Krillin, Frieza, and possibly the androids (OR they could end up making 2.0 versions of all those figures) but it's hard to say what will happen at this point, other than saying a PCE SS Goku is unlikely.

Those listings are highly overpriced, i watched one sale on auction just like a week ago for 690, the box was stable but it had quite a bit of white around edges but in similar condition to those listings. One sold a few days ago loose with no box for 300 also. Still very valuable, but unless your box is perfect these guys arent gonna sale for that. |

Dunno if that's karma, Murphy's Law, or I just suck with eBay auctions. |

Here's a question for you. What's so good about the San Diego Comic Con 2011 Super Saiyan Goku? Why is he so expensive is a better question. Now, I would want him... IF HE WEREN'T $5,000! Now there must be something other than the new paint job on him. Nope. There's absolutely nothing new with him. Besides the paint, all there is new IS A STICKER ON THE BOX! Besides that and the paint, there isn't anything new. Don't get me wrong, I do think he looks nice, but I don't see the point in spending five grand on a figure with a different paint job and a sticker on the box. Never mind this post, me being a dumbass. As per usual. |
