Based on the financial reports published by Toei, I think it's safe to assume that DBS has acted as a 3 year promotion project for the franchise. The anime in itself has barely broken even in terms of sales, however it's had a huge indirect effect on merchandising and licensing globally.
I expect Shueisha/Toei/Bandai are hoping to ride the wave now for as long as they can before the next inevitable re-promotion project. My expectation is Kitaro will air for 100 episodes, meaning DB won't have it's slot back until 2020.
We'll get the movie this year, and by the end of 2019, when interest and sales start dipping they're likely come up with a new marketing ploy. Whether it be a new anime/movie/game (think pokemon Go, but searching for dragon balls instead lol)
If dragonball GT couldn't sell enough in 96 to justify its continued production for more than 2 year, I don't see what better chance Super had.
