I'm really struggling with this. What size should I make a Garlic Jr. custom figure?
In the movie Deadzone, he was big, but he wasn't huge. Based on this movie, I'd need to make him just slightly bigger than USS Broly, and make sure he has very long legs. I could use the Jakks Super Roshi figure and just make his legs longer.
In this pic, Garlic Jr's upper body is the height of the length of Goku's leg. Between this time and when Goku fought Broly, Goku grew about 2 inches. Referencing a pic I posted below, you can tell that Goku's leg is longer than the upper body of Broly, so Garlic Jr. must be bigger.
If you really use your imagination here, the height of Goku standing next to Garlic Jr. would place the top of Goku's head at where Garlic Jr's belt would be if both were standing straight up. Garlic Jr's upper body isn't as tall as his lower body, so he's about 1 and 3/4 Gokus tall
In the Garlic Jr. Saga he was enormous, far bigger than Broly! At least 1.25 times bigger than he was the Dead Zone movie! If not 2 times bigger in some scenes! He's almost twice as tall as Piccolo! Making him like 13 feet tall! If I was to follow this, I'd have to make him from a 8, 9, or 10 inch Hulk figure! Broly is Saiyan, and his head is not that much larger than any other Saiyan's head. It's a bit larger, but not a lot. Garlic Jr.'s head is about 2 times bigger than the average DBZ head size, so that's good reference for scaling. This 2x head size is both and true of the movie AND the saga for Garlic Jr.
I usually won't trust video game or modern stuff for determining scale/size/height because trusting modern stuff can be like trusting fan art. Dragonball Heroes has a lot of reference material, but because the characters are rarely standing side by side, it can be unreliable.
This picture though, oddly corresponds to what I think I have in mind. A Garlic Jr. that is just slightly larger than my USS Broly (and also... a Super 13 and Bojack that aren't much smaller than my USS Broly). Worth noting: Broly barely looks USS in this pic, but then again, Garlic Jr isn't as muscular either.
In this scene... characters aren't scaling how they do in the movies. It's wrong. But it's oddly exactly how I am probably going to do it. Making the larger characters sooooo much larger than other characters means all of your larger characters that aren't custom figures are automatically too small. So I think this is reasonable. A USS Broly that Goku/Turles's height comes up to the stomach on and and everybody else based on that. Order of height from smallest to tallest: Turles, Cooler, (massive height difference in here), Bojack, Super 13, Broly, Garlic Jr. So, in other words, I'm not making Garlic Jr. twice the height of Piccolo, Goku, or in this case, Turles. It's not practical. A Garlic Jr. that size would be about as large as Movie Collection Porunga!
So that's decided. I will make Garlic Jr. a little taller and bigger than I make USS Broly. Done!
Here are some other pics that support some of the sizes between characters. I've probably posted these before. And some other interesting realizations.
If Garlic Jr. was in this lineup, as I said, he would be about 1 and 3/4 Gokus tall (and that was when Goku was 2 inches shorter) so I think the bottom of his nose would be on that top line of the line up. I won't make my figure that much bigger than USS Broly though... O kay, but let's figure out some other stuff... Heads are almost as tall as each line on the paper. Non-SS Broly is shown to be 1/2 a head taller than Piccolo, and Piccolo is over 1 head taller than Goku. USS Broly is not standing straight up I don't think, but is 2 heads taller than Piccolo and 3 taller than Goku.
In this image, USS Broly is at least 3 heads taller than Piccolo, so that works for me.
Here's non-SS Broly and Goku. Based on the official scale chart thing for the movie, Broly should be 1.5 heads taller than Goku. And he is, perfect!
These are sprites from the Super Famicon game Super Butoden 2. I've used it as reference before because I consider it pretty close to accurate. Cell and Piccolo are almost the same height. Based on my memory, that works pretty well. Based on the art above, the Broly sprite is about a 1/2 head taller than Piccolo (note that the sprite is actually a little lower on the pic than most of the other characters). Anyway, this implies that Bojack is slightly taller than non-SS Broly. You can see this easily if you imagine their pants overlaid (as if you were wondering if you could use the same legs for both characters) and you'll notice that Bojack's boots are a bit taller.
The Bojack movie took place around the same time as the Broly movie. In the Broly movie, Gohan couldn't turn SS2, but could turn SS, so in theory, they could be just a few days, weeks, months apart. If I remember correctly, Gohan turned SS in only his last (only?) training session in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, so there isn't a 'year' between him being able to turn SS and SS2. There's only a few days and the death of Android 16 standing in the way of that.
So... that said... the size chart for the Broly movie should work just fine for the Bojack movie. So here's where it gets complicated trying to relate things to each other.
Non-SS Broly is basically 4 heads taller than Gohan. Based on the game sprites, Bojack is maybe 0.5 heads taller than non-SS Broly. So Bojack is at least 4 to 4.5 heads taller than Gohan based on this deduction.
Is it true? Yep! In this image (yeah, it's super hard to tell and you have to actually put your fingertip on the screen and count it out), Bojack is just over 4 heads taller than Gohan. Gohan is basically on his tip toes, so his standing height would be about the same as what is shown here. So you can consider non-SS/SS Broly to be the same height or just slightly shorter than Bojack.
That's an interesting result to me. Bojack and non-SS/SS Broly are basically the same height! ___________________________
Here's some more useful stuff I found while researching Garlic Jr pics.
Concerning Dragonball Heroes being hard to trust... It can be unreliable if you aren't sure if a character is close to the camera, or just looks that way. For example, Rilldo and Frieza look to be the same distance away, but Rilldo should be much, much larger than Frieza. For that matter, Cell should be a lot larger than Frieza as well if they were side by side. I think a lot of the modern stuff has a lot of problems with showing distance. Or... this image is just totally bad reference material.
I find something like this, and I'm like "Yeah, Vegeta, Goku, and Trunks all look almost the right size next to each other" but Gohan is way taller than he should be. He was 11, not 14 (okay, you could say... in DB Heroes, perhaps he actually is 14ish!), but why is his head the size (or larger) of an adult? He's a bit off. Also, it's strange that the Capsule Corp logo on Trunks' jacket is in an unfamiliar place.
Bojack's gang looks basically exactly how I would say they relate in size to one another. This is honestly really great in my opinion.
Turles's crew looks way off, Amond should be much larger than Deiz, so it's another one of those "is he supposed to be further back than he looks to be, or did they just draw him too small?"
It'd be a lot of work for me to figure out how big Amond actually is, but I think he's probably bigger than Nappa and maybe equal to Recoome. Is Deiz the size of Raditz? Another hard question that would take a bunch of work for me to figure out.
This group pic... is almost spot on accurate! This is rather impressive.
Here's some reference for Garlic Jr's henchmen
I don't know the origin of this last one, but I really, really like it, except for one major thing. The scale is way, way, way off! The Zarbon lookin' dude is not supposed to be anywhere close to the size of the guy with horns and red hair.
.....*wants to smack Branjita for spending 3 hours on this and not actually customizing, whilst only like to get one sentence responses*
I commend your research. It's spot on for the most part and very thorough. In fact, too thorough! Just remember that Garlic Jr is many different sizes in many different reference pics. So, I say (as I did as well) make him as big as you prefer. He's one of those characters that can be made in a specific range of sizes and neither could be wrong. My one bit of advice regarding the unknown and ever-changing heights of Garlic Jr, Bojack, Broly, Super 13, and even Lord Slug is that they should NOT all be the same size. But their exact heights can range from different sizes.
Lastly, Mustard (the horned henchman of Garlic Jr) should be closer to the size of Vinegar (the biggest one). Spice (the Zarbon-looking dude as you say) is the right size in that image.

Great collection of reference pics you have there! I never even noticed how much Garlic Jr. grew. The Broly pics were informative, too. I don't really think measuring in heads is a very good height measurement system, though, since head sizes can vary greatly depending on the character or art.
Looking for: UNIFIVE SAIYAN SERIES NAPPA, BANPRESTO SOFUBI ZARBON
Heads are actually a really dependable way to do measurements believe it or not. It's how I learned to measure heights in art classes and it will give you correct proportions. And fortunately, nearly every character in DBZ has a head that isn't much different in size from human or each other.
So, not only is it good for measuring how tall a character is (I'm typing this quickly so none of this will be thought out or based on any reference material) but it's also good for comparing other characters. So let's say you have an image of Krillin and Vegeta. And you have another image of Krillin and Goku. If Krillin is 5 heads tall in both, you can see how many Krillin heads tall Goku is and how many tall Vegeta is.
But since Krillin's head isn't much bigger than Goku's or Vegeta's if you don't count their hair, you can just use how tall their own heads are to figure out they are 6 and 7 heads tall or whatever.
It's really useful to do, and it's a shame Irwin's sculptor of NBA SS Gohan didn't attend "using heads to measure height and proportions" day in art class like I did.
Here's the best example of not using heads. This is something you can do when you have photoshop available to you, otherwise you'd be doing the head trick.
Back when Sychosculpt was talking about how he'd make Chilled for several members, but he needed to know what size, I was the one who figured out the size of him. He didn't own any 5 inch DBZ figures, so he couldn't guess what size would be right. Chilled was hardly ever shown next to Bardock unless he was kicking or something and so it was extremely difficult to figure out how big he was actually supposed to be. Major problem!
So, I noticed his head was just slightly bigger than Bardock's (just like Frieza's head is) and what I did was scale a picture of Chilled next to my figures and a ruler, and that gave us the measurements of him to get him in the proper scale.
I went ahead and threw the extra heads on the pic so you could see how you'd measure him if you had sculpted a head the right size, didn't know how tall the body should be, and were referencing a picture you printed out.
If I bothered to photoshop a pic of Garlic Jr. next to USS Broly yesterday, I probably could have figured out what took me so long pretty quickly, but since his head is not the same size as Broly's it'd be kind of hit or miss. And, of course, hand drawn artwork isn't extremely consistent, it's not like we're dealing with sprites or 3D models, so there will always be variation.
I just watched the DBZ Kai Buu Saga closing theme, and this is a good reason why I don't believe newer artwork.
Videl is normally shorter than any of the other females, but at least they got the other female heights right other than her. Goku and Gohan are too tall. They are almost as tall as Yamcha in this, and if you compare Goku's height to Chi Chi, he's much too tall. Vegeta is taller than Bulma in this, usually his chin and her chin are about equal. Piccolo and Tien are a little taller than usual here as well. Chaozu has become baby sized again lol. Roshi has shrunk.

Yeah, I don't agree with a few of those sizes. When comparing Ox King to Bulma & 18, there's differences.

lol almost all pics of Ox King are inconsistent. Nothing is perfect, you just kind of have to consider him to be HUGE and that's about it. There's some scenes in Saiyan or Namek saga where he's probably not even Tien's height, and it's when he's arguing with Chi Chi inside the house.
